Leeward House

Mount Nevis Estate, Nevis, West Indies

Popular Oualie Bech

LEEWARD House was for a number of years the home of an American couple who lived on the island and it is now owned by UK newspaper publisher Vic Gardner and his wife Anne through a local company.

The house is quiet and private, yet there is gourmet dining at the Mount Nevis Hotel just a couple of minutes away along a private footpath.

Within walking distance are the atmospheric, preserved ruins of historic Cottle Church, built by the much respected plantation owner Thomas Cottle in 1824 for his family and the workers on his estate.

Just five minutes away by car is the famous Nisbet Beach, which is protected from the Atlantic swell by a reef, and even closer in the opposite direction is the popular Oualie Beach, slightly more informal but extremely popular with families and offering fishing aboard the Sea Brat, diving, snorkeling and all the usual facilities.

The people of Nevis are some of the friendliest in the Caribbean. Their history and the history of the island from colonial times is fascinating and well documented … visitors cannot fail to be captivated by this very special island – the “Queen of the Caribees.”
